Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school on Saturday, where she revealed a significant allocation of $750 million towards the implementation of additional red flag laws. This educational institution holds a tragic history, as it was the location of a devastating incident on February 14, 2018, where 17 innocent lives were lost due to a legally obtained firearm.
During her visit, Harris made two important announcements. Firstly, the Biden Administration is establishing a National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center, which will receive funding from the aforementioned $750 million. Secondly, she urged state legislatures to utilize the federal funds to enhance the enforcement of red flag laws.
Harris said:
“Red flag laws are simply designed to allow communities a vehicle through which they can share, and have somewhere to share it, information about the concern about the potential danger or the crying out for help of an individual and then let’s give it to them before tragedy occurs. Part of why I am here today is to challenge every state to pass a red flag law.”
